Lucerne, Switzerland

Lucerne has an attractive Old Town that runs along the banks of Lake
Lucerne. The covered bridge in the background dates from the 14th century
and is known as the Chapel Bridge (Kappelbrücke). It was
badly damaged in a fire a little over a decade ago and large portions of it
have been rebuilt. The octagonal building in the foreground is
called the Watertower (Wasserturm) and it has served as a treasury and
prison among other uses. For more information about Lucerne, visit
the town's
official tourism website.

The church in the
photograph above (the Jesuit Church or Jesuitenkirche) was built by the
Jesuits in the 17th century, with later additions and alternations. As you
can see, it is particularly attractive when illuminated.

Lake Lucerne, also called the Vierwalstättersee,
borders a number of Switzerland's cantons. Along its shores you
will find many scenic villages like this, so be sure to take a cruise on
Lake Lucerne.
